Ruwan uses a smartwatch when he exercises.

(a) The smartwatch can connect to a Bluetooth health monitor. (1)

(b) The health monitor uses Bluetooth to transfer data to the smartwatch.

(i) Explain why Bluetooth rather than infrared is used for this transfer. (2)

Infrared requires line of sight which is not always possible when exercising. Bluetooth does not require line of sight. That's why, the health monitor uses Bluetooth to transfer data to the smartwatch.

(ii) Give two factors that might affect the speed of the transfer. (2)

1 The speed at which devices can transfer data depends on the bandwidth of the connection.

2 The speed of data transfer also depends on distance.

(c) Some data need to be encrypted when it is transferred.

Describe how encryption helps keep data secure. (2)

Encryption encodes, scrambles or jumbles data or a message so that it cannot be understood by anyone other than it's intended recipient. Encryption does not prevent someone from intercepting a message - instead it prevents the from being also to understand it.

(d) Ruwan's smartwatch uses GPS to monitor his location.

Give two pieces of information that could be calculated using GPS data. (2)

1 It can calculate the best route between two or more locations.

2 The time to reach the destination.

(e) Some social networking services use GPS data.

Describe how the use of GPS data could place social network users at risk. (2)

User's location is published in social network and this information might be shared. This could lead abduction or used inappropriately.

(f) The health monitor stores 4 MiB of data.

Construct an expression to show how many bits are in 4 MiB. (3)

1 byte = 8 bits

1 KiB = 1024 bytes

1 MiB = 1024 KiB

So, 4 MiB = 8 x 1024 x 1024 x 4 bits

= 33554432 bits

(g) Ruwan purchased his smartwatch online.

Describe two ways in which the Internet can impact positively on companies that sell goods. (4)

1 The Internet has a global reach which makes more customers available.

2 Online reviews help the company to promote their products.
