 Ashan works in an office with a network.

(a) He uses his smartphone to make an online video call.

(ii) Describe how high latency affects his experience of the video call. (2)

Latency is the amount of time it takes to send data between devices. High latency increases the time it takes for data to be transferred between devices and Ashan may experience lagging problem of the video call.

(iii) State three ways in which latency can be reduced. (3)

1 Latency can be reduced by reducing distance between devices.

2 Latency can be reduced by reducing interference.

3 Latency can be reduced by reducing number of devices on the network.

(b) State the role of an ISP. (1)

To connect to the Internet, users need to subscribe to an ISP. ISPs provide connections to the telecommunications infrastructure that forms the framework for the internet.

(c) State the function of a gateway. (1)

A gateway connects two different types of network. For example, a LAN is connected to a WAN using a gateway.

(d) Describe two benefits of using a client-server network. (4)

1 Centralised backup: User data is protected from loss because backups can be automated for all users. This makes it more likely that backups will happen than if individual users were asked to complete backups themselves.

2 Shared software: Application servers can provide access to shared software. Some servers can provide access to operating systems.

(e) Which one of these is a method of identifying a computer on a network? (1)

(f) Which one of these is a feature of a media access control address? (1)

A It directs protocols

State the reason why Ashan is wrong. (1)

 Ashan is wrong because her smartphone uses GPS to use her location.

(h) Ashan needs to print some documents.

Explain two ways an inkjet printer performs differently to a laser printer. (4)

1 Inkjet printers print pages more slowly because the print head moves backwards and forwards.

2 Inkjet printer often produce higher resolution images because droplets can be combined to form a wider range of colours.
