The choices society must make between the expanding use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the need to protect the environment involve complex trade-offs and considerations.
E-waste is a big problem. When a device or item becomes obsolete, it can often lead to waste as the materials of the device are difficult to dispose of.
Much of the e-waste can be recycled, many obsolete working computers can be re-used as second hand devices and many materials can be disposed.
Wildlife can be tracked using ICT. Climate change can be predicted using ICT.
In conclusion ICT can be both a force for good and also have negative impacts on the environment. By controlling e-waste, the negative effects can be balanced and ICT can also be used to protect the environment by monitoring wildlife and predicting climate.
