(g) Discuss the factors that influence the choice of landline broadband or mobile broadband connectivity for rural communities. (8)
There are only two popular ways for connecting to the Internet - one is through landline broadband and the other is through mobile broadband connections.
Through mobile broadband, rural communities can connect to the Internet at any location with useable speeds and it has good signal and coverage in most of the locations. For mobile broadband, rural communities need a SIM card with data plans and a compatible device which they can carry easily to any place.
Whereas with landline broadband connections rural communities can get Gigabit speeds with symmetrical download and upload speeds and very low latency when compared to mobile broadband. They have a dedicated broadband connection which is far more reliable and affordable though it is available only within their local network or home environment.
Mobile broadband is usually used for Internet when people are on the move and need to perform quick tasks like online whereas they opt for a landline broadband Internet connection for a permanent and dedicated Internet connection for regular work and online activity.
Landline broadband connectivity is not always available as rural communities are often far from Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and it could be quite costly and difficult to install and maintain.
At last, we may say, it is a very tricky decision to choose landline broadband or mobile broadband connectivity for rural communities.
