1 LANs have a limited coverage area compared to WANs. They typically cover a relatively short distance, usually within a few kilometers at most.

2 LANs are self-contained networks within a single site, so they do not require a gateway to connect to external networks like the internet. All devices within the LAN can communicate with each other directly.

A wireless access point allows devices with Wi-Fi connectivity to connect to a wired network.

(iii) Which one of these is a hardware device that directs traffic between a LAN and a WAN? (1)

1 Wi-Fi allows mobile devices to connect to local wireless networks, such as those in homes, offices, coffee shops, and other public places.

2 Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communication technology that enables mobile phones to connect with other nearby Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as headphones, speakers, keyboards, and smartwatches.

(e) Camille uses wired and wireless connectivity.

(i) Draw one straight line from each connection method to the correct characteristic. (3)

(ii) State what is meant by ‘latency’. (1)

Latency refers to the delay or the amount of time it takes for data to travel from one point to another in a system.

(f) Describe the function of a VPN. (2)

A VPN provides access to a private LAN from a remote location. Data sent using a VPN is encrypted so that it is secure if it is intercepted.

(g) Camille uses anti-malware to secure her data online.

Describe two types of malware. (4)

1 Adware displays unwanted adverts to users.

2 Spyware secretly monitors and records computer data and user input.

(h) Explain why Camille would use a filter in her network. (2)

Camille would use a filter to prevent access to blocked URLs and sites to ensure her family does not see inappropriate or unwanted web content. This use of a content filter is primarily for maintaining a safe and family-friendly online environment.
